For ideation & validation

MINUS ONE TO ZERO

The Journey

The journey from Minus One to Zero (our nickname for the ideation and validation phase) sometimes feels like no man’s land. For you as a future founder, it’s a unique, standalone stage—usually leading either to founding a startup or going back to being an employee.

However, as a VC, we’ve observed and been involved in numerous -1 to 0 journeys, constantly trying to deepen our understanding of this process from both a practical and emotional standpoint.

Here is some useful stuff we've developed over time

Research Station

Our Research Station has one main mission: to expedite and deepen your startup validation process. It includes exclusive tools that provide reliable, up-to-date qualitative and quantitative information across many industries.
The station is located at Symbol’s office in central Tel Aviv.

Validation Check List

Each validation process has its own nuances, but there are also many recurring questions you should answer to gauge whether you are progressing in the right direction. We’ve gathered some of them here as a progress bar framework.

This is a collaborative doc, so please feel free to add your own learnings and suggestions as comments.

Workshops

While the ideation and validation process is not a science, there are best practices to make this phase easier and faster. We periodically run workshops on these topics.

‘Off the Spotlight’ Ideation Workshop

Hands-on workshop, where we experiment with a framework for looking for, and evaluating, markets and ideas that are well outside our personal radars.

Market estimation is often seen as one of the most frustrating tasks for future founders. But it’s also an unavoidable step for a VC trying to understand the potential trajectory of a business and the thought process of the founders behind it. Personally, we also believe it’s a fascinating exercise 🤓.

After establishing the market opportunity, we’ll explore effective ways to validate the product concept with potential customers and assess the founder-market fit (e.g., we believe that if you can’t get real leads on a Zoom call now, raising a seed round is unlikely to change that…).

You’ve built your team, found a compelling idea, and reached the final stages of your validation process. Just before you go out to raise your first-check round, we’re happy to provide a VC’s perspective on the tough questions you might face in pitch meetings.
